KATY — Tyrone Carter, an assistant football coach at Cypress Woods High School, was named the new head football coach and campus athletic coordinator at Cypress Lakes High School on Jan. 18.
Carter has coached at Cypress Woods since 2021, serving as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach as well as head boys’ track and field coach, while teaching special education and science inclusion classes.
“We are excited to have Coach Tyrone Carter serve as the campus athletic coordinator and head football coach at Cypress Lakes High School,” said Virginia Flores, CFISD athletic director. “Beyond his coaching ability, Coach Carter deeply impacts the athletes he serves and expressed a complete and exciting vision for the Cypress Lakes athletic program that focused on many encouraging possibilities. He has an enthusiasm and passion for the school and community that are contagious. Focused on the positive and what he can control, Coach Carter has a detailed plan to maximize the factors he can impact that pairs well with the strengths of Cypress Lakes and its community.”
Prior to CFISD, Carter coached at Huntsville High School (2018-2021), Groesbeck High School (2016-2018), Medina Valley High School (2015-2016), Del Valle High School (2013-2015), Hutto High School (2010-2013) and Arlington Heights High School (2008-2010). He served as interim athletic director at both Hutto and Medina Valley, and had assistant head football coach roles at Del Valle and Groesbeck.
Carter received both his Bachelor of Applied Arts and Science and his Master of Education in Secondary education from the University of North Texas, and earned Administration Certification (EC-12) from the University of Houston-Victoria. He is also certified in Special Education, Health and Physical Education (EC-12).
Carter’s additional leadership roles in CFISD include being an athletic coach mentor, Athletic Leadership Initiative speaker, Student Athletic Leadership Team (SALT) coordinator and Cypress Woods mentor teacher.
“My family and I are very excited about our new journey at Cypress Lakes High School as the campus athletic coordinator and head football coach. We are thankful for our time at Cypress Woods High School, but can’t wait to get on campus and start working with the kids, staff and community of Cypress Lakes,” Carter said. “I know there is a lot of work ahead of me, but we are going to roll up our sleeves, put our work boots on and get to it. Thank you to Cody Simper and Gary Kinninger for bringing me to CFISD three years ago and thank you to Dr. Lanette Bellamy and Coach Flores for believing in my vision.”
